Do you need a safe place to live with your children, but don’t have the money to afford some of the apartments you’ve been seeing? Don’t worry, you are not alone. Many single mothers find themselves between a rock and a hard place.
They want a nice apartment to raise their children in, but they don’t have the income needed to pay the rent. This forces them to choose less desirable living conditions, which puts them and their children at risk.
The good news is that single mothers do not have to settle for an apartment in an unsafe neighborhood just to put a roof over their heads. They can seek assistance from the government and local organizations for help finding safe, low income apartments.
Department of Housing and Urban Development
The first place any single mother should go to is the department of Housing and Urban Development, also known as HUD. With an appointment, you can sit down with a counselor who has a list of apartments perfect for single mothers with children. The rent is usually much lower than the apartments you can find on your own because they are especially reserved for low income families.
If you are unable to meet with the counselor, you can learn more about what HUD offers by visiting the HUD website. The application for financial aid or apartment information is available on the website, and it can be completed online and submitted.
Section 8 Housing
Section 8 housing is another program run by the United States government. It differs from what HUD provides because they give single mothers with a low income a voucher. This voucher tells landlords that they have been recognized as being able to take advantage of low income housing.
Not all apartments will allow you to receive a discount on rent. There are Section 8 apartments throughout the area you will have to choose from after receiving the voucher.
Before you get the voucher and start your search for a new place to live, you will have to apply for it. You’ll need to complete the application form and submit it with your W2′s or other tax information.
Chamber of Commerce
The Chamber of Commerce helps local businesses thrive in their community. This includes real estate owners such as landlords. For this reason, many will have a list of apartments available throughout the area. If you stick to the lower rents on the list, you may be able to find something that will be perfect for you and your children.
Social Services – Subsidized Low Income Housing
If you want to stay where you are living now, but can’t afford the past due rent as well as this month’s rent, check with social services. It usually has programs that will pay rent in arrears as well as current rent amounts to get people caught up and back on their feet.
Social services offers programs that help low income families find affordable housing. The programs change often and there are new ones created regularly, so it’s good to check in with a social worker monthly for help.
When There’s a Will There is a Way for Affordable Housing
While it may not seem as though there is any affordable housing options out there today, it might be that you have not found them yet. Keep looking every single day, and don’t give up hope.
The more you get the word out about your situation, the higher your chance of finding a safe, healthy and affordable place to raise your children.
